Students from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism,
Ogba, Lagos turned out en masse at Yaba College of Technology to mark this
year’s 2015 Global Entrepreneurship Week.
The event celebrated every year is aimed to promote
entrepreneurship culture among students from various higher schools around the
world.
Guest speaker at the event, the Managing Director,
Smada Commercial Stores Lagos, Mrs. Oyebola Adams advised students to reduce
their dependency on white collar jobs but instead, look within and make use of
their hidden potentials.
She said, ‘there is a measure of greatness in every
hidden individual. The first step is for you to search yourself and discover
your hidden potentials. Entrepreneurs are industrialists who take the
initiative.’
Speaking on the theme, ‘Unleash your potential’,
Entrepreneurship is self-employed as against job seekers. Everybody wants to go
for white collar jobs to go round.
‘The present condition of the world economy is not
helping matters. There is global meltdown, mass retrenchment, unemployment, and
the rest.
That is the more reason you need to unleash your
potentials so you also can be employers of labour. Entrepreneurship contributes
to the economy,’she added.
She went further saying, ‘Don’t be scared of
starting small. Nobody came to this world with wealth. Steve Jobs, Aliko
Dangote, Bill Gates, all started small. You must render service to get money,
don’t be a parasite.’
She concluded by charging students to step up of
their comfort zone and take a leap of faith. The highpoint of the event was
when students were led to the exhibition stands as different were displayed.
In her welcome addresss, Rector of Yabatech, Dr.
(Mrs.) Margaret Ladipo urged the students to unleash their potentials to become
wealth creators in current business environment.
The director, Centre for Entrepreneurship
Development, Mrs. Ayoola charged the students to be self-sustained in order to
curb the prevailing high unemployment rate in the country.
The week long activities included sensitization
work, business plan competition, and exhibitions.
