Nigerian Institute of Journalism joined the world
last week to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2016.
This year’s edition which took place from November
14th to 18th was themed, ’Empower the Youth, Expand your
Horizon’ focused more on building strong youthful entrepreneurs for the nation.
Students of Nigerian Institute of Journalism and
others from different institutions in Lagos participated at the lecture
organized to celebrate GEW at Yaba College of Technology where prolific
entrepreneurs took turns to reveal the secrets behind successful entrepreneurs
and how to widen their vision.
According to the principal consultant of Lonadek,
Dr. Ibilola Amoo, ‘everybody can be an entrepreneur by discovering unique potentials,
talent, and creating passion towards it.’
Dr. Ibilola also stated that strategy is better than
plan in entrepreneurship line of business noting that if entrepreneurs have a
plan, it will fail but if he has a strategy he will succeed. ‘You can have plan
A, B, and C. Any of them or even the combination will be effective. Be a
strategic planner. Whatever you do, do it exceptionally well’, she added.
Furthermore, in discussing the topic, ‘strengthening
youth entrepreneurs through sustainable socio-economic community impact,’ Mrs.
Ayarinde Adewumi, a retired lecturer of Yaba College of Technology and also an
entrepreneur, urged the attendees to detach themselves from less standard goods
packaging in order to encourage more patronage from customers.
According to her, to be successful entrepreneurs,
they must be honest, humble, problem solvers, be ready for emergencies and put
human face into their business.
In her keynote address, the institution’s director
of Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, Mrs. V. Eniola charged the students
to be strategic thinkers and planners as leaders of tomorrow.
She said, follow your dream, go for your passion, be
technically minded and value creators’.
